A port and industrial city on the Atlantic coast of Buenos Aires Province in central Argentina. Population 260,096 (1991). In 1828, a military base was established here in preparation for attacks by native tribes and an invasion by Brazil. After the end of the campaign to wipe out the native tribes (1879-83), the development of agriculture and livestock farming in the hinterland progressed, and the city flourished as a shipping port for agricultural and livestock products. During the industrialization process after World War II, the city was a center of heavy chemical industry. It also has an oil refinery.
