This is an old town in Kaiso District, located in the middle reaches of the Kishi River in northern Wakayama Prefecture. In the past, palm cultivation and processing was popular, but now the town manufactures nylon ropes and vinyl processed products. In the southern part of the town is Oishi Plateau. 和歌山県北部，貴志川中流域を占める海草(かいそう)郡の旧町。かつてはシュロ栽培とその加工が盛んであったが，現在は，ナイロンロープ，ビニル加工品などの製造を行う。南部に生石(おいし)高原がある。2006年１月，海草郡美里町と合併し町制，海草郡紀美野町となる。38.56km2。8268人（2003）。
