…Under the king were placed mahā‐kṣatrapa (great) kṣatrapas who oversaw the country, a name said to be an Indian variant of the word satrap, a local governor since the Achaemenid Empire. After the death of Mawes, the kingdom temporarily disintegrated, but around the 1st century AD, Bhūmaka and Nahapāna, a descendant of the kṣatrapas, established their power in the Saurashtra and Malwa regions. This dynasty was called the Kṣaharāta dynasty, and they endeavored to assimilate with Indian culture and protected both Brahmanism and Buddhism well. …
