Japanese: カヤラン - かやらん

An evergreen, small orchid plant (illustration) that grows on trees or rocks. The leaves arranged in two rows are reminiscent of Japanese knotweed or Japanese yarrow, hence the Japanese name. The stem is 3-6 cm long, does not form a pseudobulb, but branches on a single axis, and the leaves grow alternately in two rows on the left and right. Numerous roots grow from the middle to the base of the stem. The leaves are evergreen, leathery, lanceolate, 2-4 cm long and 4-6 mm wide. In April and May, thin flower stalks 2-4 cm long emerge from the leaf axils, and bear 2-5 flowers. The flowers are pale yellow, 7-8 mm in diameter, open slightly, and wilt within a day.

樹上または岩上に着生する常緑で小型のラン科植物（イラスト）。2列に並んだ葉がカヤやイヌガヤを思い起こさせるので，この和名がある。茎は長さ3～6cm，偽球茎とならず単軸分枝を行い，左右2列に葉を互生する。茎の中ほどから基部に多数の根を出す。葉は常緑で革質，長さ2～4cm，幅4～6mmの披針形。4～5月ころ，長さ2～4cmの細い花茎を葉腋（ようえき）より出し，2～5花をつける。花は淡黄色で直径7～8mm，少し開出し，1日でしぼむ。
