Melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH). Three types of MSH, α, β, and γ, have been isolated from the pituitary gland of animals. α-MSH is a hormone that has long been known to have a pigmentation effect in lower vertebrates. It consists of 13 amino acids and its sequence is ACTH It corresponds to the N-terminal 1-13 residues of α-MSH. However, α-MSH does not exist in adult humans. β-MSH (22 amino acids) has been proposed as the hormone with melanocyte-stimulating activity in humans, but recent studies have shown that this substance is an artifact generated from β-lipotropin during the extraction process.

メラニン細胞刺激ホルモンmelanocyte‐stimulating hormoneの略。動物の脳下垂体から，α,βおよびγの3種類のMSHが分離されている。α‐MSHは，下等脊椎動物で色素沈着作用をもつホルモンとして早くから知られているホルモンで，13個のアミノ酸からなり，その配列はACTHのN末端1～13に一致する。ただ，ヒトの成人ではα‐MSHは存在しない。これまでヒトにおいてメラニン細胞刺激作用をもつホルモンとしてβ‐MSH(アミノ酸22個)が提唱されてきたが，最近の検討によれば，この物質は抽出操作中にβ‐リポトロピンから生じた人工産物であることが判明した。
