A postwar Japanese music culture movement on par with the Labor Union Music Association. It was started in 1948 by the Central Choir, led by Seki Akiko (1899-1973), with the aim of linking life with music. The movement spread nationwide through interactions between workplaces, schools and local communities. In 1953, the National Choir Conference was founded with the slogan "Singing is the power of peace," and in 1954 it developed into the "Japanese Singing" movement, linking with the anti-atomic bomb movement. The movement reached its peak in the early 1960s, but then declined with the decline of mass movements. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
