The river originates in the Riesen mountains on the border between the Czech Republic and Poland, flows through Germany and empties into the North Sea. In the Czech Republic it is called the Labe. Its total length is 1,165 km, and its drainage area is 144,055 km2, but if the upper reaches of the river are considered to be the Vltava (Moldau), which flows into the Elbe, its total length is 1,290 km, and its drainage area is 158,331 km2.
