… West Africa, which, like South Africa, developed early in the development of broadcasting, publishing, journalism, and higher education, is a mecca for contemporary novels, especially Ghana and Nigeria. In Nigeria, there are Cyprian Ekwensi (1921- ), who has been active in the field of popular novels since the late 1940s, vividly depicting the urban life of Africans, and Amos Tutuola (1920- ), known for his work The Palm Wine Drinker (1952), which draws on Yoruba tales, but Achebe stands out in terms of his influence on later generations. In his debut novel, The Breakdown of the Tribes (1958), he pioneered a theme that can now be considered classic: the conflict between traditional African values and modern Western values, and the resulting tragedy on the African side. …
