A former town in Namegata County in the southeastern part of Ibaraki Prefecture. In October 1997, it was incorporated as a town from Kitaura Village. It is located on the northwest bank of Kitaura Lake, and most of the town area is on the Namegata Plateau. The lowland forests have been cultivated since ancient times, and sweet potatoes, leaf tobacco, peanuts, and mitsuba are produced. In recent years, the town has been number one in the nation in terms of shipping volume of bok choy, and number two in shiso leaves. Smelt, crucian carp, and other fish are caught in Kitaura Lake. The Kagoshima Ohashi Bridge connects Kitaura Lake with Hokota City on the opposite bank. In September 2005, it merged with Aso Town and Tamatsukuri Town in Namegata County to form a city, Namegata City. It has an area of 54.70 km2 and a population of 10,691 (2003).Kitaura [town]Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
