… The works of G. Sarton, who was born in Belgium and moved to the United States in 1915, such as his great work An Introduction to the History of Science (1927-47), F. Dannemann of Germany's The History of Natural Sciences (1910-13), P. Tannery of France's Essays on the History of Science (1912-50), and the series of writings by C. Singer of England, were all encyclopedic and extensive works that involved the accumulation of data. At the same time, the history of science began to be institutionalized as an academic field during this period, and the journal Isis, which Sarton founded in 1912, has been published to this day as the journal of the American Society for the History of Science (established in 1924), and is one of the most prestigious academic journals internationally. Next, based on the data thus accumulated, attempts were made to add a certain historical perspective or interpretation and construct some kind of coherent history. …

…His aim was to study the history of science from the standpoint of scientific humanism. He founded the International Society for the History of Science (1928) and became its president (1950), and also published the world-renowned journals on the history of science, Isis (quarterly) and Osiris (irregularly), laying the basic conditions for the history of science to be established as a field of study. …He gradually became interested in the history and philosophy of science research, and was one of the pioneers of this field. In 1912, when the international academic journal on the history of science, Isis, was founded by GAL Sarton, he became its Italian editor. He also published several Italian journals, and made every effort to promote the recognition of the history and philosophy of science as academic fields. In 1928, he moved to Paris and formed the International Committee on the History of Science with Sarton, CJ Singer, K. Zoethoff, and L. Thorndike, and as its secretary-general, he successfully held the first International Society for the History of Science in 1929. …
