Blackbuck - blackbuck (English spelling)

An animal of the order Artiodactyla, family Bovidae. Also called the Indian antelope. It is distributed throughout the Indian peninsula and lives in scrub forests in open grasslands. It stands 70-85cm tall at the shoulder and weighs 36kg. Only males have horns, which are 45-70cm long and twisted. Body color varies with sex and age, with the upper surface of the body being dark black in males and yellowish brown in females and young animals. They usually live in groups of 20-30, with one adult male in each group, and the leader is said to be an older female. They rest in the shade during the day and mainly eat grass in the morning and evening. They mate in February and March, and after a gestation period of about 180 days, they give birth to 1-2 babies per litter. The babies are chestnut-colored, but males turn black at 3 years old. They reach sexual maturity at 2-3 years and live for about 15 years.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱偶蹄(ぐうてい)目ウシ科の動物。インドレイヨウともいう。インド半島に分布し、開けた草原にある低木林に生息する。肩高70～85センチメートル、体重36キログラム。角(つの)は雄だけにあり、長さ45～70センチメートルで、細長くねじれる。体色は性や年齢によって異なり、体上面は雄で暗黒色、雌や幼獣は黄褐色を帯びる。普通、20～30頭の群れで生活し、群れには1頭の雄成獣がいるが、リーダーは老雌といわれる。日中は日陰で休み、朝夕におもに草を食べる。交尾期は2～3月で、妊娠期間約180日ののち、1産1～2子を産む。子は栗(くり)色であるが、雄は3年で黒くなる。2～3年で性的に成熟し、寿命は15年ほどである。
