Takao Senjimon

Japanese: 高尾船字文 - たかおせんじもん

A reading book. Written by Kyokutei Bakin. Published in 1796 (Kansei 8). A Nakahon-style reading book known as Bakin's first reading book. It is written in a style that mixes the world of the kabuki play Meiboku Sendaihagi (the Date Uprising) with an adaptation of the Chinese novel Chugi Suikoden. The idea was novel and it was the first long reading book in Edo. However, the plot, which depicts the conflict between loyal retainers Kinukawa Tanizo, Arashishi Otonosuke, Masaoka, and villains Tenzen Onitsura and Niki Saemon over the murder of prostitute Takao by the lord of Oshu Ashikaga Yorikane for his debauchery, is still stiff and does not produce the unique interest of a fantasy novel, and it is difficult to say that the idea of rewarding good and punishing evil is integrated into the novel's concept.

読本。曲亭馬琴著。1796年(寛政8)刊。馬琴の読本の初作として知られる中本型読本。歌舞伎の《伽羅先代萩（めいぼくせんだいはぎ）》(伊達騒動)の世界に，中国小説《忠義水滸伝》の翻案をないまぜた趣向で書かれている。着想は斬新で，江戸長編読本の嚆矢（こうし）となったが，奥州太守足利頼兼の遊蕩による遊女高尾斬りをめぐって，忠臣絹川谷蔵，荒獅子男之助，政岡らと，悪人典膳鬼貫（おにつら），仁木佐衛門らが葛藤するという筋立ては，まだ生硬で，伝奇小説独特の面白さを生み出すに至らず，勧善懲悪の趣旨も小説構想にとけこんでいるとはいいがたい。
