American football

Japanese: アメリカン･フットボール（英語表記）American football

A team sport invented by American students based on soccer and rugby. Players compete to score points by carrying an oval ball into the opponent's half or by kicking it over the bar of the opponent's goal. In the United States, it is simply called football and is a national sport along with baseball. It has not spread globally, and in Asia it is only played in Japan and Korea. There is a similar sport in Canada called Canadian football.

アメリカの学生がサッカーやラグビーをもとに考案したチーム競技。楕円形のボールを相手陣にもち込むとか，キックで相手ゴールのバーを越すとかして，その得点を争う。アメリカでは単にフットボールといい，野球と並ぶ国技である。世界的な広がりには乏しく，アジアでは日本，韓国で行われている程度。カナダにこれと類似したカナディアン･フットボールCanadian footballがある。
