…Others, such as King Philip II of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, whose court was in Prague, built notable collections with their enormous wealth and power, and many of these works are now in the Prado Museum and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, respectively. The so-called Kunstkammer and Wunderkammer, which were built by German princes during the Baroque period in the 17th century, can also be translated as "treasure houses" or "rooms of curiosities." They collected not only art objects in the narrow sense, but also rare shells, corals, gems, and scientific instruments, and can also be seen as one of the prototypes of today's art museums and museums. In contrast to these hobby-based collections, Louis XIII and Louis XIV of France, Charles I of England, and Pope Urban VIII, among others, collected art objects and commissioned contemporary artists to enhance the prestige of their nation (or Roman Catholicism). …
