Honegger

Japanese:
Honegger
A Swiss composer who was active in France. Born in Le Havre in northern France to a family of Swiss-German descent. He was exposed to JS Bach's cantatas as a boy and developed a deep respect for Bach. After studying at the Zurich Conservatory, he studied composition under Bidor and orchestration under D'Indy at the Paris Conservatory. At the Paris Conservatory, he developed a close friendship with Milhaud. After World War I, he began to work in the French music world as the leader of a group of composers that critics later named the "Sextérieur", releasing works such as the oratorio "King David" (1921, revised in 1923), the symphonic poem "Summer Pastoral" (1920-1921), and the orchestral work "Pacific 231" (1923). He quickly rose to fame. After the opera Antigone (1924-1927) with a libretto by Cocteau, his style gradually became more Germanic, and he crystallized into his own musical world while showing a high degree of fusion with the clear aesthetics he learned from French music. His later representative works include the oratorio Joan of Arc at the Stake (1934-1935) with a libretto by Claudel, Symphony No. 3, Liturgy (1945-1946), dedicated to Munch, one of the greatest understanders of Honegger's music, and Symphony No. 5, 3 Les (1951), commissioned by Koussevitzky. →Ondes Martenot/Xenakis → Related topics Auric | Dance of Death
