【novel】
A novel is a fictional story written in prose, but in English, a novel is a full-length novel that is the length of a book, and in terms of quality, it means a story with a strong sense of reality, in contrast to a romance. Short stories are distinguished from short stories by being called stories or tales, but it was not until the end of the 19th century that short stories that could truly reach world-class standards were produced in England.

Rabelais's Gargantua and Pantagruel and Swift's Gulliver's Travels are typical examples. The English language clearly distinguishes between romance and novels, with women's love stories and dramatic historical stories being called romances, while novels in the narrow sense are called novels, the latter of which comes from the medieval Italian word novella (which has the same origin as news and means a strange story from the street).
