A dualistic heresy in the Byzantine Empire. Also known as the Paulician sect. Its origins are unclear, but it is certain that it arose in Armenia. It first held the doctrine of adoption, but by the time it expanded to the eastern part of the empire in the 7th century, it had adopted Manichaean dualism. The name Pauline sect is said to come from the Apostle Paul or Paul of Samosata, but it is likely named after Paul, who re-established the church at the end of the 7th century. It was subjected to persecution during the reign of Constantine IV in the second half of the 7th century, and in the first half of the 8th century, its main force migrated to the Mananari region, which was under Muslim control.
