A reservoir is a reservoir that stores water from a river, for the purpose of generating electricity, irrigation, water supply, flood control, etc. The need for a reservoir arises when the amount of water in a river or other source of water fluctuates greatly throughout the year and it is not possible to expect a constant supply of water. Therefore, reservoirs are often not needed when the water source is stable, such as groundwater or lakes. There are two methods: damming a river and creating a reservoir there, or drawing water to another suitable location and storing it there. Lake Okutama and Lake Sayama are famous as sources of water for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

発電，灌漑，上水道，治水などの目的で，ダムなどにより河川の水をためておく池。貯水池の必要性は，水源としての河川などの水量が年間を通じて変動が激しく，常時必要な取水が期待できないときに起ってくる。したがって，水源が地下水や湖沼のように定常なものには貯水池は必要としないことが多い。河川をせきとめて，そこに貯水池をつくるのと，別の適当な場所に水を引いてきてためる方式とがある。奥多摩湖や狭山湖などは東京都の上水道水源として有名である。
