Born: October 25, 1885 in Nebraska
[Died] March 29, 1970. Beijing. An American female journalist with extensive knowledge of China and the Soviet Union. Known for her unbiased reporting on the Chinese Revolution and the Soviet Union during its construction period. Graduated from the University of Chicago in 1907. Visited the Soviet Union as part of the American Friends Service Group in 1921. Traveled to Canton with MM Borodin of the Soviet Union from 1925 to 1927. Served as deputy editor of the Moscow Daily News, the first English language newspaper in the Soviet Union from 1930 to 1936. Visited Hankou and Chongqing from 1937 to 1938. Met with Mao Zedong in Yan'an in 1946, and heard Mao's theory that the atomic bomb was a paper tiger. In 1949, she was expelled from the Soviet Union on suspicion of espionage and returned to the United States. In 1953, the Soviet Union found her innocent. She lived in Beijing from 1958. Published Letters from China (monthly) from 1962 to 1970. His works include his autobiography, I Change World (1935), The Chinese Conquer China (49), Stalin Era (56), The Rise of the Chinese Peoples's Communes (59), When Serfs Stood Up in Tibet (60), and China's Millions: Revolution in Central China, 1928 (65).

[Died] August 19, 1895. Minnewaska, New York. American lawyer. Qualified to practice law in Pennsylvania in 1832 and opened a practice in Reading. Served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1847 to 1851. Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in 1857. Appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by President U. Grant in 1870, he played a leading role in overturning the Supreme Court's opinion that the Legal Tender Act, which authorized greenback paper money in 1862, was unconstitutional. Resigned in 1880.

アメリカの法律家。 1832年ペンシルバニア州で弁護士資格を得てリーディングで開業。 47~51年連邦下院議員。 57年ペンシルバニア州最高裁判所判事。 70年 U.グラント大統領により連邦最高裁判所判事に任命され,62年のグリーンバック紙幣の認可に関する「法貨法」 Legal Tender Actが違憲であるとする最高裁判所の見解を破棄することに指導的役割を演じた。 80年辞任。
