A former town in Ogasa District, southern Shizuoka Prefecture. It consists of Makinohara in the east and low marshes along the Kikugawa River in the west. The town produces rice, livestock, and greenhouse horticulture such as melon cultivation are also thriving. Tea is cultivated in Makinohara. 静岡県南部,小笠郡の旧町。東部の牧ノ原と西部の菊川沿岸の低湿地よりなる。米を産し,畜産,温室メロンなど施設園芸も盛ん。牧ノ原では茶の栽培を行う。2005年1月小笠郡菊川町と合併し市制,菊川市となる。30.36km2。1万4374人(2003)。
