Nagato Nawa - Nagato Nawa

Japanese:
Nagato Nawa - Nagato Nawa
Year of death: 3rd year of Kenmu/1st year of Engen (August 7, 1336)
Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. A military commander in the late Kamakura and Nanboku-cho periods. His first name was Nagataka, Lord of Hoki. Son of Yukitaka. Until his father Yukitaka's time, the family lived in Nagata, Hoki Province, and took the name Nagata, but during Nagataka's time, they moved to Nawa in Kan'yū County (Nawa Town, Tottori Prefecture) in the same province, and took the name Nawa. They owned the good port of Nawaminato, and accumulated wealth through commercial activities along the coast of the Sea of Japan. In the leap February of the second year of the Shōkei/third year of the Genkō era (1333), when Emperor Go-Daigo escaped from Oki and landed in Hoki, Nagataka welcomed the emperor, setting up camp at Mt. Funakami, and repelling an attack by the shogunate forces led by Sasaki Kiyotaka. For this achievement, the emperor bestowed upon him the character "year" (toshi), and he changed his name to Nagato, and is said to have also been given a family crest. On May 23 of the same year, when the Emperor departed from Mt. Senjo and headed for Kyoto, Yoshitaka accompanied the Imperial Army for many years. During the Kenmu government, he was appointed as a member of the Record Office, the Office of Decision-Making for Miscellaneous Cases, and Higashiichimasa, and enjoyed the height of honor by serving as a personal bodyguard for the Emperor. People envied his long years of prosperity, calling him "Miki Issou" (the title given to four of Godaigo's loyal retainers). His son Yoshitaka was also awarded the Yashiro Manor in Higo Province for his military achievements. In October of the first year of Kenmu (1334), he was ordered by the Emperor to capture Prince Morinaga at Seiryoden and send him to Kamakura. During the Kenmu Rebellion, Yoshitaka defeated the Ashikaga Takauji Army and forced them to retreat to Kyushu, but when Takauji's army, having regained its strength, entered Kyoto, he accompanied the Emperor and took refuge in Mt. Hiei. On June 30, 1336 (the 3rd year of the Kenmu era/the 1st year of the Engen era), he marched into Kyoto, but was killed in battle at Ichijo on Omiya Street (referred to as the Battle of Sanjo-Inokuma in the Baisho-ron).
