Japanese: 青幇 - チンパン

One of China's secret societies, also known as the Red Bang. Its origins are said to date back to a self-defense group of Grand Canal stevedores organized in the early Qing dynasty, and from the late Qing to the Republic of China it spread among the lower classes in northern and central China, with its leader being Du Yuesheng (1888-1951). It cooperated with Chiang Kai-shek's anti-communist coup in 1927, and gained economic power through the smuggling of salt and opium.
