Italian poet, novelist, and critic. Born in Genoa, he majored in Italian classical literature at the University of Turin. At a young age, he published poetry collections such as Laborintos (1956) and Erotopaenia (1958), which mixed Greek, Latin, English, French, and German languages. His anthology The Newest Poets (1961), which compiles the poems of five poets of his generation, including Giuliani, Balestrini, Pagliaran, and Porta, sharply criticized the mainstream Hermetismo (alchemy) of contemporary poetry. These five formed the "Group of '63" in Palermo in 1963. His works include Caprice Italiana (1963), Sugoroku Asobi (1967), and Satyricon's Play (1970), which are ambitious experimental novels. His critical essays include Thought and Language (1965) and Giornalino (1976). Since the 1980s, he has published more avant-garde poetry collections, such as Bisvidis (1987), Untitled (1992), and Corollario (1997). His active activities have made him a leading figure in the "neo-avant-garde." He also visited Japan for the "Italy in Japan 2001" project, which was agreed upon by the Japanese and Italian governments, and appeared in the "Poetry Festival" held in Tokyo's Ginza district in April, where he recited his poems to the accompaniment of avant-garde music. He is also a professor at the University of Genoa and an elected member of the National Diet.
