1487‐1524 Founder of the Safavid dynasty. Reigned 1501-24. Born in Ardabil, Azerbaijan, he claimed to be a descendant of Musa al-Kāẓim, the seventh Shiite Imam. He led the Kizilbash and occupied Shirvan in 1500, and entered Tabriz the following year, becoming emperor. After unifying the whole of Iran, in 1510 he defeated the Uzbek army in Central Asia and expanded his territory from the Euphrates River to the Amu Darya. However, after suffering a major defeat at the hands of the Ottoman Turks in 14, he gave up leading his army and died in despair. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
