Okazaki [city] - Okazaki

Japanese: 岡崎[市] - おかざき
Okazaki [city] - Okazaki
A city in central Aichi Prefecture, occupying the eastern part of the Okazaki Plain and part of the Mino Mikawa Plateau. It was incorporated as a city in 1916. The central city area on the left bank of the Yahagi River was a castle town around Okazaki Castle, which was built in the Middle Ages, and is the birthplace of Tokugawa Ieyasu. In the early modern period, it was a post town on the Tokaido Road and a river port on the Yahagi River. The population has increased rapidly with the opening of the Tokaido Main Line, Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line, Tomei Expressway, and Shin-Tomei Expressway, and the number of commuters to Nagoya City is also increasing. The city was once a thriving textile industry, but since the 1970s, the transportation equipment and chemical industries have developed significantly, and it has become an industrial city with a manufacturing shipment value of 1,332.6 billion yen (2003). It also produces traditional industries such as Hatcho miso, Sanshu kettles, Mikawa cotton, and fireworks. In January 2006, Nukata Town, Katsuta District, was incorporated. Area: 387.20 km2 . Population: 372,357 (2010).
