An evergreen perennial plant of the orchid family. It is also called "Hokuro". It is distributed in Japan, the Korean peninsula, and China. It grows in somewhat dry mountain forests, and is a common orchid in the woods of the Kanto region. The roots are thick, white, and string-like, and grow long. The leaves are clumpy and linear, 20-50 cm long and 6-10 mm wide, with a glossy dark green upper surface and a pointed tip. In early spring, a fleshy flower stalk 10-20 cm tall stands upright, and a single pale yellow-green flower opens sideways at the top. The flower stalk has several scaly leaves, and the flower is 3-5 cm in diameter with a white lip with deep red-purple spots. The salted flowers are soaked in hot water and enjoyed. It has been widely cultivated for ornamental purposes since ancient times, and many varieties are known.
