Verse - Inbun

Japanese: 韻文 - いんぶん
Verse - Inbun

A piece of writing with a certain rhythm and form. In Chinese poetry, rhyming characters are placed at the end of a sentence to adjust the tone, while Western poetry utilizes rhyme and rhythm. In Japan, rhyming is represented by tanka and haiku, but there are also other forms such as choka, imayo, setoka, wasan, and katauta. Generally, rhyming is considered to be poetry, but even if it is written in rhyme, it cannot be called poetry if it does not have a poetic spirit. For example, Fukuzawa Yukichi's "All the Countries of the World," published in 1869 (Meiji 2), was a world geography guidebook written in 7-5 rhythm, but it had nothing to do with poetry. Also, rhyming is contrasted with prose, and Paul Valéry explained the difference between the two as if rhyming were dance, then prose would be like walking.
