A bird of the falcon family. It has a wingspan of 35 cm, and males are rather small. Its back is dark gray, and its underside is grayish white with rows of dark spots. It is distributed widely around the world, breeding in Japan from Kyushu northward, and some migrate from the north in autumn and winter. Many of them build nests on rocky ledges, and prey on birds on the coast, river basins, and fields. It may also attack feral pigeons in urban areas. It rams its prey from the sky, knocking it down with its feet and capturing it. It is used for falconry. Falcons found in Japan include the larger Gyrfalcon, which migrates from the north as a winter bird, and the smaller Japanese Humpback Falcon, Lesser Kestrel, and Common Kestrel, which breed in Hokkaido and Tohoku. It is classified as endangered (Ministry of the Environment's 4th Red List). → Related topic Falconry Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
