An island in the mid-western part of the Korean Peninsula, south of Chosan-gun. Population 6,776 (1980). It belongs to South Korea and serves as a maritime frontline base for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Most of the island's area of 45.2 km2 is forest land, but there are more than 1,000 hectares of farmland, and most of the residents make a living from agriculture. It was once used as an exile site. It has a low, hilly topography with a highest point of 184 m, and the coastline is lined with cliffs, including wave-cut cliffs, and there are many scenic spots with strangely shaped rocks, especially in the west and south. 朝鮮半島の中西部,長山串(ちようざんかん)の南方海上の島。人口6776(1980)。韓国領に属し,朝鮮民主主義人民共和国に対する海上前線基地となっている。面積45.2km2の大部分は林野であるが,田畑合わせて1000余haあり,住民の多くは農業によって生活している。かつては流配地として利用されたこともある。最高点184mの低平な丘陵性地形をなし,海岸線は波食崖など断崖が連なり,特に西部,南部に奇岩の景勝地が多い。
