Etimasia - Etimasia

...The former are, for example, the Virgin and Child (there are several types), Christ the Teacher (making a gesture of blessing with his right hand and holding the Bible in his left hand, preaching alone or surrounded by his disciples), Christ the Crucified (representing the doctrine of the Passion or the Atonement, sometimes accompanied by the Virgin Mary, John, and others), Christ the Victorious (a figure based on the symbols of evil), Christ the Judge, Christ in Glory (accompanied by the four living creatures described in the Apocalypse - an angel, a lion, a bull, and an eagle - or by angels), Deēsis (Christ flanked on either side by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, who intercede for sinners), and Etimasia (a scene awaiting the coming of the Last Judgment). These occupied the most important places in the church, such as the vault, the main dome, and the semicircular tympanum above the entrance of the church, and served to give the faithful a visual understanding of important doctrinal matters.
