Barge - Barge (English spelling)

A boat used to transport cargo on rivers, canals, bays, and ports. Some are used for transport between bases, while others are used to load and unload cargo from ships. For ease of handling cargo, they are characterized by a wide, flat-bottomed hull shape, and come in two types: self-propelled with a propulsion engine, and unpowered types that are towed. Depending on the use, they can be used as general cargo barges, oil barges, coal barges, and so on. For long distances such as inland seas, there are large ones measuring around 100 meters in length, and a special type can be loaded directly onto a barge carrier.

河川、運河、湾内、港内などでの貨物輸送にあたる舟艇。基地間の輸送にあたるものと、船舶への積み荷、揚げ荷に従事するものとがある。貨物の扱いの便宜上、幅が広く底の平たい船型が特徴で、推進機を備えて自航する形式と、曳航(えいこう)される動力のない形式がある。用途によって一般貨物用艀、油(あぶら)艀（オイルバージ）、石炭艀（コールバージ）などがある。内海などの遠距離用には長さが100メートル前後の大型もあり、特殊な形式としては、そのままバージ・キャリアーに搭載するものもある。
