〘Noun〙① Waste that is produced when lumber is sawn with a large saw or a saw . It is used as fuel, moisture-proofing, to stop floors from resonating, to smoke against mosquitoes, and as a cold-weather material. Sawdust. Wood waste. ※32nd Artisan Poetry Contest (around 1494), verse 4: "Ogahiki, sawdust, like the scent of flowers in the spring mountain breeze, falls like trash." ② A word used to insult someone. It means a useless, trash-like human being. ※Kabuki Nenki (1811-15), verse 9: "In front of the pampas grass flowers, the sawdust acts rudely."

〘名〙① 大鋸(おが)や鋸(のこぎり)で材木などを挽(ひ)いたときに出るくず。燃料、湿気止め、床の響止め、蚊いぶし、防寒材などに使われる。のこくず。ひきくず。※三十二番職人歌合（1494頃）四番「おがひき鋸のこのめも春の山風に花の香ながらおかくつぞ散る」② 人をののしっていう語。何の役にもたたない、くずのような人間の意。※歌舞妓年代記（1811‐15）九下「尾花の花の顔みせに、不礼はたらく鋸末(オガクヅ)めら」
