1316-90 A medieval scholastic philosopher. Born into a wealthy family in Helmstedt, he studied in Prague and travelled to Paris to earn his bachelor's degree. He gained fame as a teacher in the Faculty of Arts and Letters at the University of Paris, and became rector of the university in 1353. He left Paris around 62 and served Pope Urban V at the papacy in Avignon. He participated in the founding of the University of Vienna, and became its first rector in 65, but resigned after one year. In 66 he was appointed bishop of Halberstadt, a position he held for the rest of his life. His works cover natural science, mathematics, and logic.
