A medieval scholastic philosopher. Born into a wealthy family in Helmstedt, he studied in Prague and travelled to Paris to earn his bachelor's degree. He gained fame as a teacher in the Faculty of Arts and Letters at the University of Paris, and became rector of the university in 1353. He left Paris around 62 and served Pope Urban V at the papacy in Avignon. He participated in the founding of the University of Vienna, and became its first rector in 65, but resigned after one year. In 66 he was appointed bishop of Halberstadt, a position he held for the rest of his life. His works cover natural science, mathematics, and logic.

中世のスコラ哲学者。ヘルムシュテットの富裕な家に生まれ，プラハで学び，パリに遊学して学士号を得た。パリ大学学芸学部教師として名声を博し，1353年に同大学の学長となった。62年ころパリを去り，アビニョンの教皇庁でウルバヌス5世に仕えた。ウィーン大学の創設に参画し，65年初代総長となったが1年で辞し，66年ハルバーシュタットの司教に任ぜられ，生涯その職にあった。彼の著作は自然学，数学，論理学にわたる。
