Carissa (English spelling) Karaunda

Japanese: カリッサ(英語表記)karaunda
Carissa (English spelling) Karaunda
It is an evergreen shrub of the Apocynaceae family, 4-5m tall, with two sharp thorns growing from the nodes, the tips of which are usually bifurcated once or twice. The flowers are white and beautifully fragrant, and in tropical regions, because of the thorns, it is used as a hedge to prevent intrusion by humans and livestock. The opposite leaves are oval, slightly pointed at the tips, about 5cm long, dark green, glossy, somewhat thick and hard. The flowers are about 3cm in diameter, with thick, star-shaped petals divided into five pieces. There are five stamens. The fruit is spindle-shaped, 4-5cm long, beautifully red when ripe, and purple-black when fully ripe.
