It is a transliteration of the Sanskrit word poadha, and can be translated as "long-cultivation" or "long-purification." Monks gather in one place once every two weeks, on the 15th and 30th or 15th and 29th, to read out the "Haradaimokusha" (a collection of 250 precepts), and those who have sinned repent and reflect on their actions. Since this is a meeting to confirm that the precepts are being followed, attendance is strictly regulated and unauthorized absence is not permitted. This is a Buddhist sect, but in Mahayana Buddhism in China and Japan, Mahayana Budhassa based on the "Bonmo-sutra" was also practiced, and in Japan, the Bonmo-sutra Budhassa was particularly popular. For lay people, it refers to observing the eight precepts on the six fasting days (8th, 14th, 15th, 23rd, 29th, and 30th).
