...In contrast, in lakes in the plains where phytoplankton production is high, the deep water has low oxygen content, and benthic animals such as midges that have hemoglobin and can tolerate low-oxygen environments dominate. Based on this close relationship between plant production, the amount of oxygen in the deep water, and the species composition of benthic animals, the German Thienemann classified the lakes into two types, the former as Tanitharsus type (the name of the indicative benthic animals) and the latter as Chironomas type.
