Luxemburg and other party leaders assumed the German Revolution would take a long time, but many party members overestimated the state of the revolution at the time and decided not to participate in the National Assembly elections, instead joining the uprisings that occurred in various places in the first half of 1919. Although the Communist Party was a small force, the government and bourgeoisie, in order to prevent the revolution from progressing, linked all uprisings and general strikes with the name of Spartacus and severely suppressed them. Luxemburg and Liebknecht were killed by the counter-revolutionary forces in January 1919, and Leo Jogiches (1867-1919) in March, leaving the party without a capable leader. There were various currents within the party, including syndicalists, and the successor leader, Paul Levi (1883-1930), adopted a policy of focusing on expanding the organization at the second party congress in October 1919 and eliminated opponents. ...
