Fernandez, E.

[Mexican Movie]
In 1931, a group of Soviet filmmakers led by Sergei M. Eisenstein stayed in Mexico for about a year to document the state of post-revolutionary Mexico. They shot the unfinished film Viva Mexico!, which is said to have inspired the development of Mexican cinema. However, it was not until the 1940s that a truly Mexican film that broke away from the influence of Soviet montage techniques and social themes was born and reached a world-class standard. In particular, a series of highly artistic melodramas directed by Emilio Fernandez (1904-86) and filmed by Gabriel Figueroa (1907- ), such as Wild Flowers (1943), Maria Candelaria (1944), and Unfaithful (1949), starring Dolores del Rio, and The Pearl (1948), based on an original story and screenplay by American novelist John Steinbeck, won awards at international film festivals around the country, including the Cannes Film Festival, and attracted attention. Mexican films of the 1950s were represented by Luis Bunuel, who had been living in Mexico since 1947.
