A synthetic fiber obtained by spinning long-chain synthetic polymers that mainly contain polyurethane, a polymer with urethane bonds (-NHCOO-). It is extremely elastic and is known by the generic name of spandex. It was developed in Germany and Japan (by Toshio Hoshino) around 1940, and was named Perlon U and Pollan, respectively. In the United States, DuPont began industrial production in 1960 under the brand name Lycra, and Luber began industrial production under the brand name Vilen. In addition to its elasticity, it has good abrasion and chemical resistance, and is easy to dye. It has a wide range of uses in clothing, including women's underwear such as brassieres and corsets, sportswear, supports, and bandages.
