In contrast to the Daibutsu-style and Zen-shu-style styles that emerged during the Kamakura period under continental influence, this is an architectural style that has been practiced in Japan since before the Kamakura period. Originally a Chinese or Tang Dynasty style, this term refers to Japanese adaptations of these styles, but also includes those built on a base and with an earthen floor that retain the continental style. No crossbeams are used, and the axis is strengthened with nageshi (rail-like beams), the windows are lattice windows, the doors are wooden doors or shitomido (sliding doors), and frog-legs are used instead of daifuku (large bottle brackets). The rafters are parallel, and there are no decorative details such as wooden noses. The main remains are the main hall of Sanjusangendo (1266) and the Tokondo (Eastern Golden Hall) of Kofuku-ji (1415).
