The former name of a town (Isshiki-cho) in Hazu-gun, in the central-southern part of Aichi Prefecture. It currently occupies the southwestern part of Nishio City and faces Mikawa Bay. The former Isshiki-cho was incorporated as a town in 1923 (Taisho 12). In 1954 (Showa 29), Sakushima Village was incorporated. In 2011 (Heisei 23), it was incorporated into Nishio City. National Route 247 runs through the town, and regular ferries operate between Isshiki Port and Sakushima. Located at the mouth of the Yahagi Furukawa River, the area is dominated by the delta created by the Yahagi Furukawa River and newly reclaimed land. Rice farming, flower cultivation, mainly carnations, eel farming, and seaweed farming are thriving. Isshiki Port is the base for coastal fishing. Specialties include fishing nets and shrimp crackers. Sakushima is the largest island in Mikawa Bay and has a longer history than the other islands. There are several dozen ancient tombs, a beach, a campground, and a sea fishing center. The Suwa Shrine's Giant Lantern Festival on August 26-27 is famous for warding off sea demons, in which 12 giant lanterns measuring 10 meters in length are hoisted. [Gohei Ito] "Isshiki Town Journal" (1970, Isshiki Town) ▽ "Isshiki Town 25 Year Journal" (1994, Isshiki Town) [Reference item] | |This festival is held at Suwa Shrine, located in Isshiki-cho, Nishio City, every year on August 26th and 27th. The giant lanterns, which are around 6 to 10 meters long, are said to have originated from the large bonfires that were once lit in prayer to ward off sea demons. A total of 12 large lanterns are donated, two by each of six groups of parishioners.
