Aoyama Setsushi - Aoyama Setsushi

A historian of the late Edo period and a samurai of the Mito domain. His given name was Nobuyuki, his pen name was Shisei, he was commonly known as Ryōsuke (Ryōsuke), and his pen name was Sessai or Unryū. He was taught by his family and studied under Tachihara Suiken. In 1823 (Bunsei 6), he became president of the Shōkōkan, responsible for the compilation of the Dai Nihonshi. In 1840 (Tenpo 11), prior to the opening of the Mito domain school Kodōkan, he became its head professor (sōkyō), was awarded 350 koku, and worked with Fujita Yukoku and others to reform the domain government under the domain lord Tokugawa Nariaki. He died in office in Tempō 14. His main works include The Imperial History (Sho Zoku), Meichouroku, and Sessai Bunshū.

江戸後期の歴史学者、水戸藩士。名は延于(のぶゆき)、字(あざな)は子世(しせい)、通称は量助（量介）、号は拙斎また雲竜。家学を受け、立原翠軒(たちはらすいけん)に学ぶ。1823年（文政6）『大日本史』編集事業の責任者彰考館総裁となる。1840年（天保11）には水戸の藩校弘道館(こうどうかん)の開学に先だち、その教授頭取（総教）となり、350石を給せられ、藤田幽谷(ふじたゆうこく)らとともに藩主徳川斉昭(とくがわなりあき)の藩政改革に尽力した。天保(てんぽう)14年在職中に没した。主著に『皇朝史略』（正続）、『明徴録』『拙斎文集』などがある。
