A historian of the late Edo period and a samurai of the Mito domain. His given name was Nobuyuki, his pen name was Shisei, he was commonly known as Ryōsuke (Ryōsuke), and his pen name was Sessai or Unryū. He was taught by his family and studied under Tachihara Suiken. In 1823 (Bunsei 6), he became president of the Shōkōkan, responsible for the compilation of the Dai Nihonshi. In 1840 (Tenpo 11), prior to the opening of the Mito domain school Kodōkan, he became its head professor (sōkyō), was awarded 350 koku, and worked with Fujita Yukoku and others to reform the domain government under the domain lord Tokugawa Nariaki. He died in office in Tempō 14. His main works include The Imperial History (Sho Zoku), Meichouroku, and Sessai Bunshū.
