Dutch painter and printmaker. Born in Leiden, he studied under his father and then under C. Engebrechts. He quickly distinguished himself as a precocious copperplate engraver and was seen as Dürer's greatest rival in the north. He also produced etchings, which were still rare at the time. As a painter, he showed a new tendency to create altarpieces with biblical themes, such as the highly narrative Adoration of the Golden Calf and The Healing of the Blind Men of Jericho, but he also showed a deep interest in the manners and customs of his time, and displayed his own unique personality in a series of works that can be considered precursors of genre painting, such as Players Playing Cards.

オランダの画家，版画家。ライデン(レイデン)に生まれ，父，次いでエンゲブレヒツC.Engebrechtsに師事。早熟の銅版画師として早くに頭角をあらわし，北方におけるデューラーの最大の好敵手と目された。当時まだまれなエッチングも制作している。画家としては説話性の強い〈黄金の子牛の礼拝〉〈エリコの盲人の治癒〉などの聖書主題を扱った祭壇画に新傾向を示す一方，同時代の風俗にも深い関心を向けて，《トランプをする人々》など風俗画の先駆とみなしうる一連の作品に独自の個性を発揮した。
