Mount Otakine

This mountain is located in the eastern part of Fukushima Prefecture, on the border between the Takine and Tokiwamachi districts of Tamura City and Kawauchi Village in Futaba County. It is the highest peak in the Abukuma Highlands, with an elevation of 1,192 meters. It is made of granodiorite, and on the western slope is a limestone plateau called Sendaihira, where the Irimizu and Abukuma Limestone Cave are located. There is a radar site for the Self-Defense Forces on the summit. Until the early Meiji period, the area near the summit was a large grassy mountain where horses were grazed. Currently, it is covered with azaleas and other shrubs, and offers a good view. It is part of the Abukuma Kogen Chubu Prefectural Natural Park, and there is a hiking trail from Ogoe Station on the JR Ban'etsu East Line.

福島県東部、田村市滝根町地区、同市常葉町(ときわまち)地区と双葉(ふたば)郡川内村(かわうちむら)との境界にある山。阿武隈高地(あぶくまこうち)の最高峰で、標高1192メートル。花崗閃緑(かこうせんりょく)岩からなり、西側斜面には仙台平(ひら)とよばれる石灰岩台地があり、入水(いりみず)、あぶくまの鍾乳洞(しょうにゅうどう)がある。山頂には自衛隊のレーダーサイトがある。山頂付近は明治初年までは広い草山で、馬の放牧が行われていた。現在はツツジなどの低木が群生し、展望がよい。阿武隈高原中部県立自然公園の一部、JR磐越(ばんえつ)東線大越(おおごえ)駅から登山道がある。
