Pocahontas (English spelling)

Japanese: ポカホンタス(英語表記)Pocahontas
Pocahontas (English spelling)
Born: Around 1595, near Jamestown, Virginia
[Died] March 1617. Daughter of the chief of the Powhatan tribe of Native Americans in Kent. Also known as Matoaka. She married J. Rolfe, one of the settlers of Jamestown, the first British colony in North America, which began construction in 1607, and who succeeded in improving tobacco cultivation. In 1616, she was invited to London with Rolfe to promote the Virginia Company as an example of the Christianization of Native Americans and the success of colonization efforts, and was celebrated in high society as an American princess, but she died of illness the following year before returning home in 1617. The peace between the settlers and the natives symbolized by this marriage was short-lived with the great Powhatan uprising in 1622. In his writings, J. Smith, one of the founders of Jamestown, described how she was saved by her plea for mercy when she was captured and about to be killed by the Powhatan tribe, but the truth of this is unknown. Her life was later used as the subject of novels and plays, and the "Story of Pocahontas" was created and mythologized.
