Yanka Kupala (English spelling)

A Belorussian (now Belarusian) poet and playwright. His real name was Ivan Dominikovich Lutsevich. Born to poor peasants, he worked in a variety of jobs while publishing a succession of poems and plays that depicted the lives and suffering of the common people, incorporating elements of Belarusian folk songs. After the October Revolution, he wrote poems that sang of the changes in life in Belarus and the construction of socialism. He also did an excellent job of translating Russian literature into Belarusian. In addition to the collection of poems "The Horn" (1908) and the long poem "On the River Olesa" (1933), he wrote many other poems and plays.

ベロルシア（現ベラルーシ）の詩人、劇作家。本名はイワン・ドミニコビッチ・ルツェビッチ。貧農の子に生まれ、さまざまな職業を転々としながら、白ロシアの民謡の要素を取り入れ、民衆の生活や苦しみを描く詩や戯曲を次々に発表。十月革命後は白ロシアにおける生活の変化、社会主義建設を歌う詩を書いた。ロシア文学の白ロシア語への翻訳においても優れた仕事を残している。詩集『角笛(つのぶえ)』（1908）、長詩『オレサ河畔(かはん)にて』（1933）などのほか、多数の詩と戯曲がある。
