A Belorussian (now Belarusian) poet and playwright. His real name was Ivan Dominikovich Lutsevich. Born to poor peasants, he worked in a variety of jobs while publishing a succession of poems and plays that depicted the lives and suffering of the common people, incorporating elements of Belarusian folk songs. After the October Revolution, he wrote poems that sang of the changes in life in Belarus and the construction of socialism. He also did an excellent job of translating Russian literature into Belarusian. In addition to the collection of poems "The Horn" (1908) and the long poem "On the River Olesa" (1933), he wrote many other poems and plays.
