Chordotonal organs are a type of insect mechanoreceptor that are located under the body wall, with their tips attached to one part of the body wall and their afferent side attached to another part, and are a collection of sensory elements stretched out like a string. Chordotonal organs include the tympanal organ, an auditory organ unique to insects. In addition to the tympanal organ, other chordotonal organs consisting of a relatively small number of sensory elements are located near the joints of the body, such as the antennae and legs, and act as proprioceptors, although some detect wing movement. In addition to the tympanal organ, other chordotonal organs consisting of a large number of sensory elements include the subgenual organ and Johnston's organ.
