[Born] 525 BC, Eleusis Died 456 BC. Gera, Sicily. One of the three great Greek tragic poets. Perfected the form of Attic tragedy. During the Persian Wars, he participated in the decisive Battle of Marathon (490 BC) as a heavy soldier. The only surviving Greek historical play, Persai (Persians) (performed in 472 BC), is based on his experiences at the naval Battle of Salamis (480 BC). From a young age, he participated in drama competitions as a playwright, and it is said that he wrote 90 works, many of which were trilogies. He won 13 times since his first victory in 484 BC. Other surviving works include Hepta epi Thebes (467 BC), Hiketides (463 BC), Prometheus Desmōtēs (Prometheus Bound) (c. 460 BC), and the trilogy Oresteia (458 BC), which consists of Agamemnōn, Choēphoroi (The Offering Women), and Eumenides (The Goddesses of Charity).
