It is the capital of the Ille-et-Vilaine department in western France. It is located 344 km southwest of Paris, in the eastern inland of Brittany, at the confluence of the Ille and Vilaine rivers in the Rennes Basin. It has a population of 206,229 (1999). It is the only large city in the inland region of Brittany and the central city of the region. It is home to a university, an archbishopric, and a court of appeal, and has outstanding administrative, judicial, religious, and commercial functions, and its sphere of influence extends to the entire eastern part of Brittany. Since the 1950s, in addition to the traditional printing, textile, and food industries, industrialization has progressed, centered on the automobile industry, and more recently, the electronics industry has become popular. The development of railway and road networks has strengthened ties with Paris, promoting industrialization. Located on fertile land, it has prospered since the days of the ancient Roman province of Gaul, and has many historical buildings. A fire destroyed the city in 1720, but the remaining buildings include the Law Courts (Breton parliament from 1618 to 1655), the town hall (18th century), and the cathedral (18th and 19th centuries). During the Gallic period, it was the center of the Celtic Redones people, and the city name comes from this tribe. It flourished in the Middle Ages, competing with Nantes for the position of capital of the Duchy of Brittany. During the French Revolution in 1793, it became a base for the republicans against the royalist Vendée Rebellion. It suffered heavy damage during World War II.
