In 1905, the same year that Fauvism was established in Paris, Kirchner, Erich Heckel (1883-1970), and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976), architecture students at the Dresden University of Technology, formed the group in search of new forms of expression in reaction to the naturalism, symbolism, and impressionism of the time. The name “Bridge School” was given by Schmidt-Rottluff in hopes of uniting the group, but later their works came to be seen as a bridge to new art. …
